It is the true heart of the city, which has witnessed many conquerors, noble families, and dramatic events over the centuries.

History and Evolution of the Fortress

The first fortifications at this site existed as early as the time of Kievan Rus’ (9th–10th centuries) as a wooden stronghold of the Bilohirya Slavs. In the 11th century, after the Hungarians conquered the region, construction of a stone fortress began.

The powerful Italian noble family of the Druget left the greatest mark on the castle’s history, having owned it for over 300 years (from the 14th to the 17th centuries). It was they who radically rebuilt the fortress, transforming it into a powerful defensive bastion capable of withstanding prolonged sieges. Massive walls up to 10 meters thick and over 15 meters high were erected along the castle’s corners, and it was reinforced with bastions equipped with cannons.

Later, the castle passed into the ownership of the Counts of Berceni, and eventually it housed a Greek Catholic seminary, for which the palace underwent another renovation in the late Baroque style (the palace retains this appearance to this day).

Architectural Complex

Palace (citadel): A two-story, quadrangular building with massive corner towers, which today serves as the main museum. The Druget family coat of arms can still be seen on the facade—four black birds (crows) holding severed Turkish heads in their beaks (a reminder of the family’s victories).

Dry Moat and Bridge: The castle was once completely surrounded by a deep moat spanned by a drawbridge. Today, a permanent bridge stands in place of the moat, leading to the main gate.

Inner Courtyard: A cozy courtyard featuring interesting sculptures (including the mythological god Hermes and the famous sculpture of Turul, a mythical bird).

Legends of Uzhhorod Castle

The White Maiden: The most famous legend tells of the daughter of one of the castle’s lords. During a siege, she fell in love with the commander of the enemy army and told him about a secret passage. When her father learned of her betrayal, he ordered her to be walled up alive within the castle walls. It is said that even today, on moonlit nights, her ghost, dressed in white, wanders the palace corridors in search of her beloved.

What’s Inside and Practical Information

Museums: Today, the T. Legotsky Transcarpathian Regional Museum is located within the walls of Uzhhorod Castle. It features exhibits of weapons (ranging from ancient to modern), antique furniture, clothing, coins, and icons. The cellars still contain eerie torture chambers.

Tasting Room: Inside the castle, tourists are invited to sample the finest Transcarpathian wines.

How to get there: The castle is located almost in the center of Uzhhorod (33 Kapitulna St.), not far from the pedestrian bridge and the famous Holy Cross Cathedral. It’s easy to reach on foot through the city’s picturesque historic streets.

Saint Miklós Castle in Chynadiyovo: A Romantic Fortress of Love

Saint Miklós Castle in the village of Chynadiyovo, near Mukachevo, is a unique 15th-century architectural landmark that has miraculously been restored from ruins thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts. Unlike grandiose palaces, this castle has an intimate, chivalric character and exudes the true romance of the Middle Ages.

History: From the Perényi Barons to a Scandalous Love Affair

The castle was built in 1450 by Baron Peter Pereni as a formidable defensive structure to protect the Carpathian mountain passes. The walls of the lower level are over one meter thick, which made it impregnable to the conquerors of that time. Later, the fortress lost its purely military significance and was transformed into a comfortable palace-castle with Renaissance elements.

The most remarkable chapter in the history of “St. Miklós” is linked to the name of an extraordinary woman—Ilona Zrinyi (the very same heroic defender of the Mukachevo Palanka). In this castle, she secretly met with her lover, the count’s son and future freedom fighter for Hungary, Imre Tekeli. This romance, which was strongly condemned by contemporary society due to the difference in age and social status, has entered European history textbooks as a symbol of great love. For this reason, St. Miklós Castle is often called the “Castle of Love.”

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the castle came under the ownership of the renowned German noble family, the Schönborns, who added new architectural elements to the structure. During the Soviet era, the castle housed a village council, a military warehouse, and even a tractor brigade, which caused significant damage to the landmark.

Modern Revival and Artistic Life

In 2001, the castle was leased by the renowned Transcarpathian artist Yosyp Balog. Working on his own, with the support of volunteers and patrons, he began to save the ruins from complete destruction. Today, “St. Miklós” stands as an example of a successful private initiative in the preservation of cultural heritage.

Architecture: It is a two-story building with two massive corner towers and arrowslits. The walls still feature ancient stone portals and traces of old frescoes.

Inside: The castle’s halls recreate the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. They host exhibitions of paintings, collections of ancient Celtic and Scythian artifacts, as well as a display of traditional Transcarpathian rugs (lizhniks).

Cultural Center: The castle regularly hosts art workshops, historical festivals, knightly tournaments, and even wedding ceremonies. One of the most spectacular events is the annual “Silver Tent” festival of medieval culture.

Practical Information for Tourists

How to Get There: The castle is located in the village of Chynadiyovo, approximately 10 km southeast of Mukachevo. From the Kyiv–Chop highway, it’s easy to reach by car or by taking the “Mukachevo–Chynadiyovo” minibus (the stop is near the train station).

Hours: The castle is open to visitors daily (usually from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.).

Special feature of the tours: Tours are often led by the founders and restorers themselves, who give fascinating accounts of the fortress’s history and secret rooms. Admission tickets are typically based on a voluntary charitable donation toward the castle’s restoration.

Uzhhorod Castle is the city’s oldest and best-preserved fortress, which has stood on a volcanic hill in the historic center of Uzhhorod for over a millennium.
