It is located at an elevation of 989 meters above sea level within the Synevyr National Nature Park, on the border of the Mizhhiria District in Zakarpattia Oblast. The lake impresses with its pristine beauty, crystal-clear water, and majestic forests that surround the water’s surface like a wall.

Origin and Geographical Features

The lake was formed approximately 10,000 years ago as a result of a powerful earthquake that triggered a rockslide. The rocks completely blocked the valley of a fast-flowing stream, creating a natural dam behind which the basin of the future lake filled with water.

Area and Depth: The water surface covers an area of about 4–7 hectares (depending on the season and water level), and the average depth ranges from 8 to 12 meters. At its deepest points, the bottom drops to nearly 22–24 meters.

Water Supply: The lake is fed primarily by precipitation and numerous mountain streams. The water here is always icy cold, and even in the hottest summer, it warms up only at the surface (the temperature remains low at depth).

The Island in the Middle: A tiny islet in the middle of the lake’s expanse adds a special touch of romance to the landscape; its shape resembles the pupil of an eye. That is why Synevyr is popularly known as the “Sea Eye.”

The Legend of the Love of Syne and Vira

Like most of the Carpathians’ wondrous places, Synevyr is shrouded in a poetic yet tragic legend of ill-fated love.

According to legend, a wealthy count’s daughter named Sin lived in these mountains; her eyes were as blue as the sky itself. One day, while walking through the forest, she heard the sounds of nature and saw a simple shepherd named Vir playing a light-colored flute. The young people fell in love at first sight.

However, the girl’s father opposed their relationship and ordered the young man to be treacherously killed by dropping a huge boulder from a cliff onto him. When Xinyi learned of her beloved’s death, she ran to that spot, embraced the stone, and wept so bitterly, so long, and so intensely that her tears formed a clear, deep lake that has preserved their names forever—Synevyr. Today, majestic wooden sculptures of a young man and a young woman stand on the shore of the lake, symbolizing eternal love.

What to See Around the Lake

A trip to Synevyr is a wonderful opportunity to discover other unique locations nearby:

Brown Bear Rehabilitation Center: Located right next to the national park.
