For centuries, this mighty structure defended the salt routes and controlled the intersection of several valleys, bearing witness to key historical events in the region.

Historical Facts: From Tatar Raids to a Devastating Explosion

Construction of the fortress: Construction of the castle began in 1191 during the era of the Kingdom of Hungary and was completed in the early 12th century (around 1199). Its primary purpose was to protect the salt mines and trade routes leading from Solotvyno.

The Mongol Invasion: In 1241, the castle withstood a brutal siege during the Mongol-Tatar invasion, although it sustained significant damage; as a result, it had to be rebuilt and its defensive walls reinforced.

Transylvanian Princes: In the 16th and 17th centuries, Khust Castle repeatedly became a bone of contention in the wars between Transylvania and the Holy Roman Empire. Transylvanian diets often convened here.

The Fatal Moment—A Lightning Strike: A fateful day in the castle’s history occurred on July 3, 1766, when lightning struck the fortress’s powder tower. A powerful explosion destroyed the upper levels, the ammunition depots, and the defensive walls. After this disaster, the castle was never rebuilt; it gradually turned into picturesque ruins.

Architectural Features and Structure

Khust Castle was built according to the classical system of medieval European fortification:

Lower and Upper Castles: The complex consisted of several levels. At the top was the citadel (Upper) castle with palace buildings and the deepest well (over 160 meters, carved directly into the rock), while below were spacious courtyards for the garrison and defensive walls with bastions.

Wall Thickness: The castle walls were several meters thick in places, making it nearly impregnable to assault by the artillery of the time—until that fateful explosion.

Legends of Khust Castle

Prince Koriatovych and the Dark Forces: According to folk tales, the castle is associated with Prince Fedir Koriatovych. Legend has it that to build such a tall fortress, he made a pact with the dark forces. Another legend tells of underground passages that supposedly stretched for kilometers beneath the ground and connected Khust Castle with other fortresses in the region.

Practical Information for Tourists

How to get there: The castle is located on Castle Hill on the outskirts of the city of Khust.
