The Geographical Center of Europe: A Unique Landmark in the Village of Dilove

The Geographical Center of Europe is one of the most famous landmarks and tourist attractions not only in Transcarpathia but in all of Ukraine. It is located in the picturesque village of Dilove in the Rakhiv District, on the banks of the turbulent Tisa River, practically right on the border with Romania. Every year, thousands of travelers stop here to see the historic monument with their own eyes and take commemorative photos.

History and Precision of Calculations

The origins of this geographical landmark date back to the late 19th century, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire was actively expanding its network of roads and railways in the Carpathians.

  • Installation of the marker: In 1887, scientists from the University of Vienna conducted thorough geodetic surveys and measurements throughout what was then Austria-Hungary. Using special instruments and complex mathematical calculations, they determined that it was precisely here, in the Upper Tisa Valley near the village of Dilove (then known as Ober-Dereva), that the center of Europe’s hypothetical geometric equilibrium was located.
  • Latin inscription: A Latin inscription is engraved on the stone geodetic marker, which has survived to this day: “Locus Perennis Delicentissime cum libellure libraque gentes corographically id est Europa. In torquens specimen substetit sub 1887,” which confirms the accuracy and timing of the measurements conducted by Austro-Hungarian specialists.

The Modern Complex and Tourist Infrastructure

Today, a convenient tourist complex has been created around the historic marker, attracting travelers:

  • Commemorative stele: A small stone pillar with an inscription marking the geographic center of Europe has become a landmark of the Rakhiv region.
  • Information stands and maps: On the grounds of the complex, visitors can learn about the details of the measurements, the history of the region, and other interesting routes through the Carpathian region.
  • Souvenir markets and kolybas: Nearby, there are colorful eateries where you can sample traditional Transcarpathian dishes, as well as purchase authentic souvenirs, crafts by local artisans, Carpathian forest honey, and herbs.

Practical Information for Tourists

  • How to get there: The most convenient way is to travel by car or intercity bus along the Mukachevo–Rakhiv–Maly Berezny route, or from the direction of Ivano-Frankivsk via the Yablunytsky Pass to the town of Rakhiv, and from there, head south along the Tisa River toward the Romanian border. The sign is located right next to the highway, so it’s hard to miss.
  • What to combine with your trip: A trip to the geographical center of Europe can easily be combined with a visit to the highest waterfall in Transcarpathia—Trufantsia—a hike up the Svidovets Ridge, or a tour of the town of Rakhiv.
