A serious household accident nearly claimed the life of a young child. After being rushed to the intensive care unit at the Regional Children’s Hospital, the girl’s condition was stabilized.
A serious household accident involving a young child occurred in the Svalyava district. At home, a massive dresser along with a television suddenly toppled onto the two-year-old girl, causing critical head injuries.
The incident was reported to the Transcarpathian Regional Center for Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine.
Critical condition and a fight for her life in the ICU
As a result of being struck by heavy furniture and appliances, the child sustained a severe closed head injury. Her condition rapidly deteriorated to critical—the girl fell into a coma.
Emergency medical team No. 1103, led by paramedic T. I. Potsko, responded to the emergency call:
- the medical team performed emergency resuscitation measures right at the scene;
- they provided respiratory support and stabilized her vital signs during emergency transport;
- and transported the patient to the intensive care unit of the “Transcarpathian Regional Children’s Hospital” in Mukachevo.
Positive Progress and Discharge from the ICU
Thanks to the professional actions of the paramedics and intensive care specialists at the Regional Children’s Hospital, the worst was avoided.
The young patient’s condition has improved, and the threat to her life has passed—the child has emerged from the coma. She has already been transferred from the intensive care unit to the hospital’s trauma ward, where she is currently continuing a course of comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation.
In accordance with protocol, medical staff notified law enforcement agencies of the incident to investigate all the circumstances surrounding it.
A Word of Caution for Parents: How to Make Your Home Safe from Furniture Tip-Overs
Doctors and first responders are once again urging parents of young children to thoroughly check the safety of their homes:
- Secure furniture to the walls. All tall cabinets, dressers, bookcases, and side tables must be securely fastened with special brackets or anti-tip straps.
- Secure televisions. Appliances should be mounted on wall brackets or secured to tabletops with safety cables, as children often try to open drawers and stand on them, creating leverage that can cause the furniture to tip over.
- Don’t leave attractive items on top. Toys, TV remotes, or gadgets placed on tall dressers encourage young children to climb up the drawers.
