On Saturday, October 31, a tragic traffic accident involving a truck occurred in the village of Iza in the Khust District, resulting in the death of an elderly man.
According to the Main Directorate of the National Police in Zakarpattia Oblast, law enforcement received a report of the accident on Tsentralna Street at 4:46 a.m. Investigators from the Main Directorate of the National Police, operatives from the Khust District Police Department, and an emergency medical team were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate that at approximately 4:20 a.m., a 77-year-old resident of Khust, while driving a “MAN” truck, was traveling along an unlit section of the road and struck a pedestrian. According to preliminary data, the pedestrian was on the roadway in the direction of the vehicle’s travel. The victim was identified as a 65-year-old resident of the village of Lypcha in the Khust District.
Emergency medical team No. 1001, led by Dr. O. M. Bezruchko, arrived urgently to assist the victim. Medical personnel found the man on the road showing no signs of life; he had suffered a severe open head injury. The doctors did not give up and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, attempting to restore his heartbeat and vital functions. Unfortunately, due to injuries incompatible with life, they were unable to save the 65-year-old pedestrian. Medical personnel were forced to declare him dead.
Law enforcement officers conducted a medical examination of the 77-year-old truck driver—no signs of alcohol intoxication were found; he was sober while driving.
Investigators from the Department for Investigating Transportation Crimes of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Zakarpattia Oblast opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of traffic safety rules resulting in the death of the victim).
The penalty under this article provides for imprisonment for a term of three to eight years, along with the revocation of the right to operate motor vehicles. As part of the investigation, a series of forensic examinations has been ordered to establish all the circumstances and causes of the accident.
The editorial staff of “Zakarpats’kyi Visnyk” extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. We urge pedestrians under no circumstances to walk on the roadway in the dark without reflectors or flashlights, and drivers to exercise the utmost caution when driving in populated areas.
