Officers from Police Station No. 1 (Vynogradiv) of the Berehove District Police Department promptly solved a property crime committed under martial law.
According to the communications department of the Transcarpathian Regional Police, a 34-year-old resident of Vynogradiv contacted law enforcement the day before to report that her bicycle had been stolen directly from her own property.
An investigative team was immediately dispatched to the scene. Law enforcement officers interviewed the complainant and potential witnesses to the incident and reviewed footage from nearby surveillance cameras. Thanks to the investigative measures taken, police quickly identified the suspected thief. He turned out to be a 32-year-old local resident who had previously come to the attention of law enforcement and had been prosecuted for drug-related crimes.
The investigation has preliminarily established that on that evening, the man was walking down one of the city’s streets when he noticed an unlocked bicycle in the yard of a private home. Taking advantage of the owners’ absence, the suspect entered the property unhindered and rode off on the stolen bicycle.
Detectives tracked down and detained the suspect. The stolen bicycle was seized as evidence and will be returned to its rightful owner shortly.
Investigators from the Vynogradiv City Police informed the suspect that he is suspected of committing a criminal offense under Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (theft committed under martial law).
The penalty under this article provides for imprisonment for up to eight years. The pretrial investigation is ongoing.
