The day before, on October 30, two accidents were reported in the Zakarpattia region, resulting in minors sustaining serious lacerations and cuts to their lower limbs. Both incidents were related to the use of chainsaws in the home.
This was reported by the “Transcarpathian Center for Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine.”
First Call: Rakhiv District
The first incident occurred in the Rakhiv district. A 14-year-old boy, while sawing firewood on his own on the property, lost control of the running tool, causing the saw chain to catch his left leg.
Emergency medical team No. 1206, led by paramedic I. O. Andrusyak, promptly arrived at the scene. Medical personnel diagnosed the boy with an open wound on his lower leg measuring approximately 6 × 1 cm, with soft tissue damage. They provided initial treatment for the cut, stopped the bleeding, applied an aseptic bandage, and hospitalized him at the Rakhiv District Hospital for surgery.
Second Call: Irshava District
Later, a similar report came in to the “103” hotline from the Irshava area (Khust District). There, a 16-year-old boy was injured while doing yard work. The teenager accidentally injured his left foot with a chainsaw.
Assistance was provided by on-call crew No. 901, led by paramedic D. I. Kormosh. After assessing the patient’s condition, the specialists provided him with emergency medical care, immobilized the injured limb, and transported him on a stretcher to the Irshava District Hospital.
A Safety Appeal from Medical Professionals
Emergency medical specialists are sounding the alarm and urging parents to strictly prohibit children from using chainsaws and other dangerous tools. Working with a chainsaw requires not only considerable physical strength but also the mandatory use of protective clothing, footwear, and safety glasses. Furthermore, children are often unable to react quickly in the event of a kickback from the tool.
👉🏿If a deep cut occurs, medical professionals advise:
👉🏿Immediately apply pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or sterile material (apply direct pressure);
👉🏿Apply a pressure bandage;
In case of heavy bleeding, call “103” immediately and apply a tourniquet above the wound if the bleeding does not stop with pressure.
The editorial staff of “Zakarpattia Visnyk” wishes the injured teenagers a quick and painless recovery without complications. We urge all adults to be cautious and not leave dangerous equipment within children’s reach!
