Skakavets Waterfall: A Hidden Treasure of the Transcarpathian Forests

Skakavets (also known as Shipitsky or Voevodino) is an exceptionally picturesque—though somewhat smaller than Shipit—mountain waterfall nestled in the dense beech forests of Perechyn (Uzhhorod District), not far from the Poliana resort and the village of Turitsya.

Features and Nature

The waterfall is formed on the Shipit mountain stream (not to be confused with the river of the same name in Pylypets). Here, the water plunges in a powerful torrent from a ledge approximately 6 meters high. The waterfall got its name because the water “jumps” merrily and vigorously over the boulders, creating a myriad of splashes and producing a unique acoustic effect in the silence of the forest.

A distinctive feature of Skakavets is its location—it is hidden amid a wild primeval beech forest that is part of UNESCO’s natural heritage. The atmosphere here is like a true wild fairy tale: ancient trees, moss-covered boulders, and ferns all around.

Practical Information for Tourists

  • How to get there: You can reach the waterfall via the town of Svalyava or the village of Polyana in the direction of Perechyn. The hike to the waterfall involves a walk along a forest trail (a marked hiking route). It’s a wonderful option for a light weekend hike.
  • Best time to visit: In the spring during the snowmelt or after heavy summer rains, the waterfall is at its fullest and looks most majestic.
