A Theater That Brings Generations Together: A Look at the Yuriy-Augustin and Yevhen Sherehiy Transcarpathian Music and Drama Theater in Uzhhorod

A place where children believe in miracles, adults rethink what matters most, and audiences find emotional support and peace of mind. The Transcarpathian Regional Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater named after the brothers Yuriy-Augustin and Yevhen Sherehiy in Uzhhorod has kicked off its 106th theater season, continuing to bring people together through authentic art.

An Emotional Respite and a Mission of Enlightenment

For many residents of Uzhhorod and Transcarpathia, as well as hundreds of Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes due to the war, the theater has become a space for gatherings, lively interaction, and psychological renewal. In the auditorium, anxious thoughts fade away, giving way to genuine human emotions.

The theater’s director and artistic director, Rudolf Dzurynets, emphasizes the importance of theater in the current climate:

“The theater should inspire, soothe, and encourage people to think and analyze. It fulfills a mission of enlightenment that is vitally important today. People go to the theater first and foremost for the emotions, and it is our duty to provide them with this refuge and hope”.

Fairy tales for children and thought-provoking themes for adults

The Sheregiiv Theater’s repertoire policy successfully combines performances for audiences of different ages, exploring both the world of children’s imagination and profound sociopsychological challenges.

  • “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”—This magicalproduction transports the audience into a vibrant world of sweets, amazing adventures, and a belief in miracles. Young audience members are genuinely captivated by the characters’ adventures, while adults happily immerse themselves in warm childhood memories. According to the actors, young audiences feel the energy of the stage much more intensely, so performing for children is always a special responsibility and a great pleasure.
  • “The Other”is a dramaticplay accompanied by a live band that addresses uncomfortable yet relevant issues in contemporary society. It encourages the audience to reflect on the nature of social stereotypes, self-acceptance, the fear of being judged by others, and the right to remain true to oneself. The actors’ compelling performances and the live music keep the audience on the edge of their seats from the first minute to the last.

Live art that screens can’t replace

Audiences who attend performances are unanimous: the magic of the live stage cannot be compared to movies or social media. In the theater, the boundary between the stage and the audience blurs, and everyone present becomes a participant in the events.

The Transcarpathian Drama Theater continues to evolve, aiming to be a modern national cultural hub known far beyond the region’s borders.

Art remains important even in the most difficult times—it unites, heals, and gives us the strength to move forward.
