Has the cost of living gone up? What do local residents and visitors say about prices in Mukachevo?

Rising food prices, higher utility rates, and changes in rent—these topics remain among the most discussed among Ukrainians. Journalists from the regional media outlet “Zakarpats’kyi Visnyk”took to the streets of Mukachevo to ask passersby whether they had noticed any price changes this year.

The opinions of residents and visitors to the city were mixed: ranging from a noticeable increase in spending on basic necessities to more cautious assessments of the market situation.

“Everything has gotten more expensive—from groceries to utilities”

Some of the passersby surveyed are convinced that living in Mukachevo has become significantly more expensive. According to them, the price increases have affected virtually all areas of daily life.

“It’s not just the cost of living—everything has gotten more expensive. This year in Mukachevo… while things used to be cheaper and you could buy anything, now everything has gone up in price: from the minimum wage to gas and electricity,” a local resident shares her observations.

Another respondent emphasized that inflation is noticeable every time she goes shopping:

“It’s not just me who feels this way—everyone in Ukraine does, because prices have gone up everywhere. No matter how many times you go to the store—whether it’s for groceries or clothes—you can really tell that prices have gone up”.

Rents have risen, but market prices remain moderate

However, not all respondents consider the price increases to be critical. Some residents note that the sharpest price increases are being seen in the real estate sector, while daily expenses remain within normal limits.

“I haven’t noticed anything like that. Maybe rents for apartments and houses have gone up a little bit. But overall, I wouldn’t say so: prices are more or less reasonable, both in cafes and at the markets,” noted a city resident.

A View from Visitors to the City

Among those surveyed were some who had recently arrived in Mukachevo. For them, it is still difficult to assess the economic trends compared to previous periods.

“I can’t say that because I’m a visitor. We’re just getting to know Mukachevo,” said a visitor to the city.

Results

A street survey showed that most respondents are indeed feeling the economic changes and rising costs of utilities, food, and clothing. At the same time, prices for goods at local markets and in restaurants remain moderate for some.
