Investigators from the Rakhiv District Police Department, under the procedural supervision of the Tyachiv District Prosecutor’s Office, have completed the pretrial investigation and filed an indictment with the court against a 22-year-old resident of the village of Bedevlya in the Tyachiv District. The man is accused of committing a brazen robbery against an elderly resident of the village of Velykyi Bychkiv.
This was reported by the Transcarpathian Regional Police.
Timeline of the brutal attack
The crime took place in late August in Velykyi Bychkiv:
- Breaking into the home: The perpetrator took advantage of the fact that the front door of the 83-year-old woman’s house was unlocked and entered the residence;
- Assault and robbery: The young man immediately pounced on the defenseless homeowner, used physical force against her, aggressively demanded her savings, and took all the cash she had on hand along with her gold jewelry;
- Calling the police: After the attacker fled, the injured elderly woman was able to ask her grandson for help, and he immediately called the police to the scene.
Apprehension of the Fugitive in a Forest Area
Upon receiving the alert, police officers in Rakhiv District launched urgent investigative operations. As a result of coordinated efforts, police officers quickly tracked down and apprehended the suspect: the young man was hiding in a wooded area near the village.
During a search, law enforcement officers seized part of the funds stolen from the victim from the detainee.
Punishment Under Martial Law
The accused’s actions are classified under Part 4 of Article 187 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (robbery aimed at seizing property on a large or especially large scale, or committed by an organized group, or under martial law, or combined with the infliction of serious bodily injury).
Throughout the pretrial investigation, the suspect remained in custody without the right to post bail.
The case file has now been submitted to the court for consideration. For the robbery committed under martial law, the young man faces a sentence of 8 to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
